Why is Hemp Everywhere?

I don’t know about you, but the growth of the CBD/Hemp market is kind of scary. One minute we are believing hemp is illegal and the next you can buy it almost any place selling anything. Hemp literally appears to be everywhere and I mean everywhere. From coffee shops, doc offices and grocery stores you can pretty much buy hemp in more and more places very quickly.

Why is hemp all of a sudden found all over town?

The Farm Bill was passed in the USA in December 2018. This legalized the cultivation of hemp, sale of hemp products derived from hemp which also contains THC.

This history making bill removed hemp from the controlled substance list and also made an exception for THC which hemp does contain (although barely measurable). Hemp-derived CBD containing no more than 0.3% THC and produced under certain regulations is federally legal, as per the 2018 Farm Bill passed in December.

There are exceptions and clarifications to the Farm Bill that include -

  • CBD is considered a supplement. Therefore you cannot talk about dosing CBD. You can only suggest serving size.

  • CBD is also not allowed to be spoken about or marketed as therapeutic. No medical claims are to be made regarding CBD by any company.

State law varies regarding CBD so you need to check with your individual jurisdiction. However the FAA announced that CBD is allowed on all planes and airports. It is legally safe to fly with CBD in America, but that does not mean it is 100% fail proof. Bring a prescription, any documentation and information with you. If you are questioned you will be prepared to show TSA your information.

Once the Farm Bill was signed companies like Elixinol were ready to move and fast. Many have been waiting for years to start getting hemp into the hands of the community. So growth happened quickly based on the degree of farmers and companies waiting to start legally selling hemp. Not going to lie many hemp farmers I met have been growing some quantity of hemp even before the law was passed. Hemp is easy to grow and heals the soil as well. Sustainable and regenerative farmers use hemp to help keep the soil nutrient dense and healthy.

Now that there are so many CBD companies and products on the market I wanted to share some important information that will help you make a buying decision with an educated lens.

  • Isolate vs Full Spectrum - You want to look for full spectrum always because it is the least processed and includes the entire plant. Isolate does not and is highly processed.

  • Organic vs Non-Organic - No one can deny Glyphosate is a health hazard as law suit after law suit are won in the USA. Organic only is beyond recommended.

  • Third Party Testing - Testing matters 100% when you see a market grow this fast. Not only this the testing should be easily accessible to the consumer.

  • Ingredients - Organic and clean ingredient list imperative.

  • Distillation - How is the hemp derived? Acceptable standards are CO2 or steam distillation.

The delivery systems for hemp vary and can be found in many ways. Most common forms are -

  • Tinctures - CBD in an alcohol base.

  • Oil - Oil from the CBD plant. Ingredients should be CBD only.

  • Balm - Topical preparation infused with CBD.

  • Capsules - CBD with added carrier oil.

  • Liposome - Water soluble and fast acting.

Most important to remember that beyond delivery system decisions you need to read all ingredients. The ingredients are most important to benefit from CBD.

What is the endo-cannibinoid system and why should I care?

The endo-cannabinoid system was discovered in 1992. Brain receptors were found to respond to compounds found in cannabis named cannabinoids. These cannabinoids happen to be the most abundant neurotransmitter receptors in our brain. The cannabinoids are involved in a molecular signaling system hat regulates a broad range of biological functions.

The endo-cannabinoid was discovered when the second cannabinoid was found.

“CB2 was identified at this time, which takes presence throughout the immune system and the peripheral nervous system. The discovery of these receptors resulted in the uncovering of naturally occurring neurotransmitters called endocannabinoids (ECS).

The ECS performs multiple tasks, but the goal is always to maintain a stable environment despite fluctuations in the external environment. It is the system that creates homeostasis within the body. When an imbalance is detected within our internal environment, the body synthesizes endocannabinoids that interact with the cannabinoid receptors. This stimulates a chemical response that works to return the physiological process back to homeostasis.”

What I recommend?
