30 Day Challenges Suck

30 Day Challenges Suck

Here I am once again talking without caution about how I believe 30 day fitness challenges suck. A girl who goes by BOSS usually has no problem speaking her truth. Sorry not sorry

Yes it is true I have done them all! You name the 30 day challenge & I have done it.

I have done 30 day challenges for yoga, squatting, running, rock hard abs & to make my butt beautiful all in my recent adult life. Quite honestly I have done more than I care to admit.

With each challenge beyond completing the challenge I gave no real thought to what I was actually doing & what would happen beyond finishing the challenge. Sure I was hoping for 6 pack abs, a perfect butt & to be able to be a pretzel in yoga which of course never happened.

What did happen:

  • I over worked my body pushing if often past a comfortable limit
  • I did not listen to the needs of my body once during each challenge
  • I was driven by a desire to change my body visually

In addition if those challenges took place where money was involved they were purely consumer driven marketing idea's having little to nothing to do with wellness.

Anytime workouts are based on number of days, amount of time or reps you are disrespecting your body.

You see challenges such as this never have space for thoughts like:

  • Not today I am tired
  • Wow my body is sore maybe I should slow down today
  • How about we change it up today to allow the rest of my body to have some loving

The only space allowed is to complete the challenge no matter what.

The problem with a 30 day challenge doing the same thing is just that. It is the same thing. Nobody needs the same movement session every day & I was famous for this way of thinking. Especially because I have Multiple Sclerosis (MS) I believed this was important because at least I knew what my body could handle. FALSE & I call bullshit on my self.

Yes folks this was autopilot movement. Movement based on things that fall outside of listening to my body. Just like challenges. In addition challenges done with cost involved are purely marketing machines driven by revenue streams which could not be further from wellness.

This does not mean that I do not work out almost every day because I do. My body loves them, moves better & looks forward to our daily sessions. However today's movement sessions quite often start with a dance party to help define what they will look like. This simple fun step allows me to multi-task by offering mental support while identifying the needs of my body based on how it moves when I am dancing like a fool.

Workouts customized to support the daily needs of my body are the most respectful way & turn off the autopilot thinking. Most of us tend to follow a routine similar to this:  I go to this class M-W-F, run on off days while walking this many miles 5 days a week blah blah blah.

Where is consciousness here? Sure you may be driven by self love, but are you addressing your bodies needs doing this? NO.

After dancing I customize a movement session based on my bodies physical needs. My physical inventory coupled with a clear understanding of the potential demands on my body for that day help me design a work out that satisfies the daily voice of the body I love & cherish.
Yes this may include going to a class, taking a long walk outside or maybe both. Yet I never know until dancing what the outcome will be unless I am clearly having an issue that dancing does not need to happen for me to take note.

A 30 day challenge offers exactly the opposite. It requires your body to show up, no matter what being forced to perform. Trust me I have done enough challenges to know it is a struggle to find space for body awareness in any of them. However easy to find pushing beyond your limits in all of them.

I will call bullshit if you are sitting there thinking, "Well V you have MS so your body is different." Almost every challenge I have done with folks who are of 'normal' health & watched most end up with IT band issues, extreme body soreness often causing trouble functioning, foot problems & the list continues. Yet somehow these outcomes considered a badge of honor. WTF.

I encourage you all to take a 30 Day Self Love Challenge!

  • Wake up every day with a commitment to have a conversation with your body both mentally & physically
  • Plan your movement sessions around your bodies expressed needs
  • Show loving kindness with each movement paying attention to how they feel & what outcome they deliver
  • Be nice to yourself every step of the way driven by self love & not superficial consumer driven ideals regarding visual perfection

So the next time you want to challenge yourself for 30 days how about you consider a self love challenge that includes movement in some form every day. You just may find yourself simply dancing in the streets which is not a bad look for anyone.

Oh hell yes I have done it again. Addressed a topic that I am sure many are like 'Say What Bitch?"

No need to stop your gym membership or forgo your yoga class. Instead make sure that is what your body needs that day turning off the autopilot which often defines our workouts.

For more of my bullshit I welcome you to subscribe to this amazing newsletter. It comes out most often once a week & will always be certain to give you pause sprinkled with cursing.

My 35+ Years of Toxic Workouts

My 35+ Years of Toxic Workouts

working-out.jpg

By: V Capaldi Not going to lie I was raised in a family where going to work was how you got in a work-out. No one in my family ever once said, "I am going for a work-out or a run" in my entire childhood.

We had a beach house growing up that was 5 houses from the beach and my mom drove every day.

Working out was something I learned about thanks to Jane Fonda. Her video's exposed me to the power of a good sweat while satisfying my need to wear tights, spandex & a headband!

Aerobics was my movement drug of choice for me & the crew. Immediately after each class the 1st thing we all did was light a cigarette while sharing a nice cold can of coke. Imagine!

Never once questioning how much of an oxymoron this was. We worked out & truly believed we earned whatever we were doing.

Toxic workout.

Then MS decided to show up & Jane Fonda had to take a back seat. No longer was I hopping around while lifting body parts for the count of anything. Damn it.

For the next several years my workouts were consistent, however physical therapist defined. I literally would work out with my PT whose clients were professional athletes learning strength training, cardio & resistance work with Moses Malone, Andrew Tony, Darryl Strawberry and many more.

Healed myself enough so I put a full gym in my home. Right off my bedroom so I could use it everyday.  Which I did. In addition to walking track on average 5 days a week after dropping my kid off at school.  If it was cold outside, no problem I went to the mall before it opened (they do that on the east coast so you can walk).

After which I would go through my day eating sugar filled foods, making unhealthy choices because "I worked out."

Toxic workout.

When MS decided it was time to disable my body I took to the pool for several years until building up enough strengthen to land myself on my hero the yoga mat.

Religiously I have been a devout yogi identifying yoga as a life long hero in my wellness "Bag of Tricks."

As yoga increased my ability to heal, move and kick MS to the curb I decided to do things like: yoga everyday for 30 days, started adding a spin class before my yoga, hired someone to help me train for a 5K, increased my work out time to 3 hours/6 days a week and so on you can see the pattern.  All in the name of beating MS.

Each time my body screaming with IT band pain, neck issues, foot pain and the list goes on.

This is what is supposed to happen when you work out. Right?!?

I was doing this not to have a perfect figure, lose weight or anything that has to do with what the eye can see. I was showing this dedication to stop MS from taking over my body. I had to be diligent. Right?!?

It was not working. In fact it was making my road to healing harder. Much harder.

As luck would have it I learned about conscious eating and began to heal my body from MS using food. Also while dancing on a bar in 2014 (do not judge)  tore my meniscus.  Having MS surgery is not an option unless no other choice.

I began with a new PT who understood my concerns. His 1st few visits all he did was have me show him exactly what my work out's look like. Start to finish. He put me on a spin bike, yoga mat and walked outside, up & down stairs, watched me open drawers, cabinets, open & close doors which pretty much the whole time I was like okay this is insane. For hours he watched every move I made.

Yet by doing this almost instantly he offered simple and easy corrections.

1st order of business was he asked me to just STOP.  No yoga, spin, walks, Zumba, bike riding. No nothing.

He wanted to see what would happen if I were to allow my body to rest from intention workouts & to begin intentional workouts.

Becoming Aware of Toxic Workouts.

He asked me to consider healing by offering my body a movement conversation daily delivering what it tells you.  A work-out routine based on loving kindness of yourself.

What a freaking concept & one this BOSS at first was like, "Say what?" & "I will have what you are smoking!"

A torn meniscus when you do not want surgery leaves you with no choice, but to listen. Hate that shit. Double damn it.

Within 3 months I realized all of my pains were gone. Yes I was still moving 6 days a week, but with focused purpose of loving my body.

Not trying to beat MS or to push myself as hard as possible. Instead daily listening to my body, life & person delivering what was needed to support the immediate journey ahead.

The sad truth is I was the norm before. Many if not most of us motivated for the wrong reasons to break a sweat.

An Exercise:

  • Imagine dancing every day or walking down the street for about 3 minutes with the only purpose to see what your body is saying. Mind & spirit.
  • Do this with the commitment to support the message.
  • Then define what will make the support happen.
  • What do you have & what do you need to support the desired outcome?
  • How long will it be approximately to complete the process while committing to it?

Then do it. Whatever it is.

For me it often requires time on the yoga mat, more dancing, self myo-fascial release work & walking.

By starting your day like this you are questioning the status quo daily with an openness to create a narrative.

A narrative that supports your person 100%.

By compartmentalizing wellness it becomes a thing.

S86A0607

Realizing my daily needs guided by a commitment to higher purpose removed all toxic workouts from my life & body has never been better. I literally cannot say enough about how liberating this has been for me & a huge growth factor in my wellness journey.

I really believe this is the reason why I can drive so far now. I was self injuring before due to excessive working out. Now I honor what my person needs, open my "Bag of Tricks" pulling out what I need & the love party begins.

Not subscribed? Damn it.

Top 10 Helpful Tips to Detox Your Skin!

cosmetics-e1455077428601.jpg

By: V CapaldiThe government does not regulate the cosmetic industry to protect the public from products and harmful chemicals.

Heck they do not care about our food why would they care about our skincare?

[embed]https://youtu.be/RA61jh8HwPI[/embed]

Have you ever read the ingredient list of skincare products? If so, do you understand what you are reading?

Similar to food if you cannot identify the ingredient you probably should not eat it. If you do not know what an ingredient is in a skincare product maybe you should not put it on your skin.

What a freaking concept right?

The average skincare product has over 15 chemicals most of which have toxic, negative effects on our health and yet we never hear about this. Ever.

Obtaining knowledge coupled with how you respond is a powerful tool and I offer this information hoping you will respond with your health and no longer apply these toxins to your skin.

Top Toxin List:

  1. Parabens:  Known to cause cancer and found in shampoos, scrubs, lipstick and many cosmetics
  2. Artificial Fragrance: Potential Neurotoxins that interfere with your immune system and found in many skincare creams, perfumes, shampoos and more.
  3. Artificial Dye: Many are known carcinogens and used in nail polish, lipsticks, eye shadow and many cosmetics that have color.
  4. Synthetic Co-polymer: Known irritant to skin and used in many hair & nail care products.
  5. Imidazolidinyl Urea: This chemical releases formaldehyde while remaining on the skin hours after applied and a known carcinogen used in deodorant, shaving creams and masks.
  6. PEG compounds: Used in many creams and known to cause cancer.

Top 9 De-Tox Skincare Tips:

  1. Coconut oil:This is the magic elixir of life. From cooking to skincare this stuff rules.  I literally plow through gallons of this stuff. I make my toothpaste with it, use it as a face & body moisturizer, sun screen, shaving oil and so much more. Literally the list is almost endless here.
  2. Essential oils:  Have been using this as perfume, in my toothpaste, diffusing to freshen the air, as a spray for sheets at night for a fresh scent and good nights rest.
  3. Vitamin E: I may or may not have been know to pop open the capsules and wipe the vitamin E directly on cuts, sores, bruises.  You can purchase Vitamin E oil in bulk and it is perfect for any skin issue.
  4. Sugar Scrubs:My great friends at Nutiva have you covered so click here for easy DIY recipes.
  5. Deodorant:Give that shit up. Forget about it. Toxic poison. Throw some Witch Hazel under your pits if you need to or super hot days. I love the smell of my body sweating. The end.
  6. Shea Butter:  Makes a great skincare moisturizer and adding essential oils makes it even more fun.
  7. Nail Polish: Ditch it the stuff is so toxic. The remover the worst.  Since you may not and I have been known from time to time I recommend Mineral Fusion and the colors are rad.
  8. Oil Pulling: If you are not doing this you need to start. Nothing I can say will express how effective and amazing oil pulling is for your gum health, breath, teeth and mouth in general.  Not sure how to do it? Read here.
  9. Water:I wash my body and face with water. Straight up and it works and cleans my skin. Imagine that.
  10. Bone Broth: Replace hand Sanitizer with bacteria. Stop going crazy over germs and keep your gut flora healthy.  The use of hand Sanitizer is a consumer driven ideal and bacteria is the new black (free flavored bone broth recipes by clicking here).

Once again I would love to think all of you are going to create a non-toxic skincare routine tomorrow, but we know this is not the case. As luck would have it I ran into someone who already thought all about this.

Can I digress for a moment? #damnit

A few years back at my 1st PaleoFX convention I split a cab with someone who I thought was a stranger, but then they looked really familiar once in the cab. I even looked familiar to them.  After a few minutes of geography with the where, who, when and why we both came to realize we did know each other. In a former life we both worked at a very large burn treatment center in Pennsylvania. Trina was a Nurse Anesthetist and I was a Respiratory Therapist and quickly we were reminded of how small the world is and how far we both have come from where we were to now.

Any who ~ the moral of the story is she is the founder and CEO of Primal Life Organics which is a skincare line that is toxin FREE!  It was my 1st step into changing my skincare narrative. Today I still keep a healthy supply of the following products:

Top 5 Primal Life Organics Picks:

Dirty Mouth Serum: I hate the dentist. Did I mention I hate going to the dentist?  This stuff keeps me home and not in a dental chair even with my horrific teeth.  I add it to my DIY toothpaste and brush with it on the solo.  Amazing stuff.

Please consider stopping the application of toxic chemicals to your body in the name of skin care and cosmetics. I urge you to PLEASEquestion your status quo and up your volume regarding what you put on your skin in the name of beauty.
