How Not Focusing on Healing is Powerful Medicine

How Not Focusing on Healing is Powerful Medicine

Touring I am fortunate enough to be invited into people’s homes and lives on almost a daily basis. Although my tour is not focused on Multiple Sclerosis (MS) many I visit do have mobility and/or limb issues. If I ask them what they wished would change in a year the answer is always universal – “I want to walk” or “I want to use my arms/hands.” Even if many were depressed, sad or struggling with anxiety, bad marriages, finances and more they always want to have their body back.

Never is it that they want to be happy & healthy.

Somehow the societal norm is happiness equals using our limbs freely. I know because for years once I started to live with MS I would tell my kid and spouse if I was in a wheelchair my life would be over. Until one day I woke up and my hands didn’t work. Quickly I began to realize that many in wheelchairs and with limb issues live exceptional lives and most were happy with their lives.

Quickly once I was living it I changed my tune that a wheelchair or my hands were not going to define me. They were only one part of me.

I asked myself and the tour friends did they think “happiness existed outside of a wheelchair or mobility issue?” Unanimously they responded, “of course it did.” Funny since at the same time each of us had wished for only mobility related changes in the year.

Societal norms influences our wishes too.

Just like I mention in my TEDx societal norms come into play in the strangest ways sometimes. This is another example of the role in our lives and once again found to be an almost universal norm in many societies.

Somehow we all believe(d) if we got it right we would be without a wheelchair & have our limbs moving freely. For most of is this instead of being happy, healthy and loved.

We all know that living a happy, healthy & full life are the keys to BAM.

When we focus on one area or body part we are discounting the fullness of what life has to offer. When we focus on living a life that represents the best version of ourselves it creates the space for healing and the powerful medicine mentioned in the title.

footprints in sand copy.jpg

Key to my lens for healing are reminders that I decided or the what and why of my life.

  • No longer am I living an auto-pilot existence.

  • No longer is MS me.

  • No longer do I take Mother Nature for granted.

  • No longer do I ask more of my body than I give it. .

  • No longer do I consciously self poison with food.

  • No longer to have a negative impact on the earth without conscious effort to change.

  • No longer do I cook with foods I have no idea where they came from.

  • No longer do I believe western medicine is the only answer.

  • No longer do I believe my healthcare comes from big pharma.

  • No longer do I believe I am powerless against MS.

  • No longer do I believe our environment is toxin free.

  • No longer do I believe our water is safe to drink.

  • No longer do I believe our oceans are clean.

  • No longer do I believe my life trajectory was to be bedridden.

  • No longer do I believe eating processed food is a good idea.

  • No longer do I believe refined sugar is not poison.

  • No longer do I believe gluten is safe for anyone to eat.

  • No longer do I believe the person with the most stuff wins.

  • No longer do I believe the mind-body connection doesn’t matter.

  • No longer do I believe western medicine is healing focused.

Today I am conscious and not making life choices because of MS as much as because this is what is best for me and all that I am.

Once I began focusing on living my best life and not always MS and healing my body the true healing could begin. The healing that not only stopped what MS was doing to my body, but manages and reversed all that MS delivered(s).

Try taking your eye off of what brought you to consciousness and have both eyes focus on LIVING YOUR BEST LIFE!

Healing is Not Just For Me

Healing is Not Just For Me

One of the things I know for certain is that we all have the right to heal our bodies. That does not mean everyone is going to heal from everything, but it does mean we all have the same options before us regarding consciousness.

Now clearly if your body is filled with a deadly invasion this is an entire new level and I have no insight. If you live with allergies, constipation, disease or any condition we each have the same choices before us.

Healing comes from consciousness.

Once I realized the role I had in sickness and health beyond going to the doctor and taking drugs I made healing available to me. I had to own me. Every thought and interaction. 100%.

The autopilot of life had to stop and once that does ownership came right along with it. I remember being in the temple at Burning Man and realizing for the very 1st time I had a role in my health beyond being a good patient.

Heart in hands.jpg

What a fucking concept.

Not once did anyone tell me I had a role in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) beyond preparing myself for life with a progressive often cruel disease. I was lead to believe I was now simply a victim in waiting regarding life with MS. We simply were told to hope for the best and pray.

For decades I hoped for the fucking best.

I did every damn thing the doctors told me. I spent money and traveled far to see 'the best' in everything MS and all this did was create space for MS to continue to be in control .

Everything I did was in response to MS.

Western medicine is a response only healthcare. You have a problem they will fix it and most often with drugs to simply get rid of the symptom. You have heartburn after eating pizza simply take a pill to make it go away.

Western medicine does nothing to understand the way of healthcare.

My miracle status is because I answered and continue to answer every why. Every day.

  • Healing did not happen in a finite period of time.
  • Healing did not happen because I simply changed my diet.
  • Healing did not happen because I love to work out.
  • Healing did not happen because I fell in love with me.

I know this surprises you. All of those things are the steps that lead to the miracle known as PalreoBOSS Lady.

Knowing my why is why I am in this miracle journey. Knowing MY WHY outside of societal and cultural norms lead me to the healing steps I share above.

Healing is not only for V. It is for anyone who is willing to truly wake up & know their WHY!

Western medicine does not care about the why. Instead they care about keeping the body free of symptoms using drug therapy.

I am a miracle because I know my why. Do you know your why?

How to Add Cannabis to the Medicine Cabinet

How to Add Cannabis to the Medicine Cabinet

As many of you know I have been using cannabis for the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) since diagnosis in 1987. Even though for decades I was breaking the law by using cannabis its health benefits were so important to my well being that I felt it was worth the risks.

When I was first diagnosed with MS there were no disease modifying drugs or a standard of care treatment for MS beyond addictive pain killers & narcotics. My mother was a prescription pill addict my whole life so I quickly said no to any drugs the doctors offered instead turning to essential oils & cannabis to help my initial symptoms of muscle spasms & limb jumping.

To this day I use cannabis even though many of my symptoms have left the building due to diet & lifestyle choices.

After my healing began as a faithful Warrior who follows The Wahls Protocol I was able to go off of over 24 medications for the treatment of MS. I thought at this time I should also stop using cannabis. It became clear after about 12 weeks that cannabis was helping me with more than the symptoms I originally thought.

Little did I know all that cannabis was managing outside of diet & lifestyle.

I have scary issues with my throat due to MS. Sever spasms or becoming rigid as we call it in MS. Literally it is like a 'Charlie Horse'  that most often happens with your feet, but it is your throat. When I stopped using cannabis throat symptom returned as well as a low level of anxiety. Both of which I thought my diet & lifestyle choices had healed 100%. It was not until I stopped using cannabis that I learned how much of a role THC had in healing these two important symptoms.

Even though I am a Wahls Warrior who is a walking miracle I continue to use cannabis for the treatment & management of MS.

One of the most common questions I get regarding cannabis is where to begin. Many of my tribe reach out to ask how to get started. I wanted to give some insight into the process & some best practices using cannabis as medicine.

Most important to note is I am not advocating anyone step outside of the law regarding the use of cannabis. Although this was how I operated for many years exclusively until 2006 when I moved to CA where medicinal cannabis was legal. Today recreational use is also legal in CA & many states around the USA.

Strands: There are 3 varieties of cannabis & they are either strands called Sativa, Indica and/or a hybrid. Each one offers a different medicinal tool.

  • A Sativa will help you stay active & alert offering an overall calming effect. I find Sativa helps to calm your mind while allowing you to function without feeling high.
  • An Indica on the other hand offers an overall body effect often inducing sleep & a large sense of relaxation. An Indica strand is great for pain & sleep.
  • Hybrids are a mixture of both Sativa & Indica typically having one higher in concentration than the other. Depending on which is dominant defines the type of effect. Hybrids are classified as either Sativa or Indica dominant.

It is important to remind ourselves that we are all different & our bodies are the ultimate source of information.

When offering medical cannabis in most states it is required that the community have options for usage beyond smoking. Below I will outline the different ways most states offer cannabis to the consumer.

Edibles:  You can find cannabis in edibles of all kind from pop to brownies & even infused butters. I personally do not recommend using edibles without checking the ingredient list. Many are filled with sugars & things that do not support a conscious life. The standard dose is 10mg of THC per serving with many edibles offering more than one dose.

Edibles can take on average one hour to feel the effects. Many times edibles are hard to manage due to dosing not being exact producing an outcome that is powerful for some & not effective for others.

I strongly suggest when using edibles to put the day aside to see how your body reacts. I have learned that everyone is different & there is a learning curve that is quite individual. Only when consuming edibles have I had experiences that felt like I was tripping & produced a negative outcome. However there have also been times where the use of edibles have delivered exceptional results.

Due to the nature of unpredictability of edibles I advise to plan a day at home where you can ride the wave until you are able to have the correct dosing.

Tinctures: A sublingual form is also available which are called tinctures. This is another method for using cannabis that is easy & very effective. Although they are the least used form of cannabis they are still very powerful.

Tinctures are liquid forms of cannabis that include THC which can be administered by putting a few drops under your tongue. Tinctures are easily absorbed with many feeling the effects within 15 minutes of using. This treatment is quicker, easier to regulate & often more effective than edibles. I have personally found great success with tinctures even though I prefer to smoke bud.

Vaping: Cannabis is also available in Vape Oil. Vape oil is considered the healthier alternative to smoking. The THC & CBD oils are extracted & often added to coconut oil. Vape pens are needed to administer the oil by heating it up for smoking.

Vaporizing cannabis has been shown to not have the same negative effects on the lungs that traditional smoking does. However one has to pay attention to what is added to the cannabis oil for vaping. Some companies do add unhealthy chemicals that make this method not a good choice.

Cannabidiol or CBD oil: CBD oil can be derived from both cannabis & hemp. I am going to talk about cannabis derived CBD oil here. This oil is known to have lots of health benefits without any of the psychoactive effects of cannabis most often derived from low THC strands of marijuana. Many use CBD oil to help with pain, tremors, cancer and ADHD.

Hemp oil derived CBD oil can be purchased in every state in the USA & is much different than cannabis CBD oil. This type of CBD oil has shown great promise in helping dogs & autism. Hemp oil is much different than a cannabis CBD oil and should be noted as such. Hemp does not contain any THC making it a very different medicinal tool that is quite effective.

How to Get Started: Check the laws in your state/country to find out how to legally use and/or grow. In 2017 over 26 states have legalized cannabis for medical uses in the USA & 7 for recreational use. However it should be noted that marijuana is still against the law at the federal level and legality is a state decision only in the USA. Being informed regarding the laws and potential risks are highly recommended.

Medical license: For most states a doctor visit either in person or online is required to obtain a medical license. I have been able to get this from all kinds of partners in my wellness team. My 1st license back in 2006 came from my gynecologist and cost about $225. Today in California you can get a license for about $35 from brick and mortar & online establishments that have a doctor on staff for licensing only. It simply is not as hard to get as it was in 2006.

Licenses are good for one year. Once you are legal your information is put online for the dispensary to verify prior to purchase in states where medicinal only is legal. States with recreational use do not require a medical card, however if you have a medicinal need discounts are typically offered making a license advisable & cost effective.

Dispensary: This is where you go to get cannabis in all forms talked about. Most dispensaries have at least 10+ strands plus an assortment of edibles, oils and the tools needed to use cannabis. I highly recommend you talk with the staff (bud tenders) about the best route for you to take. Cannabis is very individual & each strand is different not only in name but in THC, CBD strength. Bud tenders are trained on strands just like a sommelier is on wine. They are very knowledgeable & should be treated just like any member of your healthcare team.

You can find dispensaries online via Weedmaps or simply google for storefronts. Some states like CA have delivery which makes life easier, but also increases the value of a trained bud tender to give you insight into what strands are working the best to support your needs. I value the role of those working in dispensaries & trust their insight & knowledge.

The use of cannabis is still controversial for many. I am sharing my 1st hand experience & knowledge based on the huge role it plays in my life with MS. There is no doubt in my mind that the medicinal benefits have been extreme in helping me tap my best life in the face of the devastation caused by MS even when I was dealing with the stress of breaking the law.

I simply cannot impress upon you enough how much cannabis has been the #1 most effective treatment for living with MS. Even in the face of the miracles that have happened with diet & lifestyle cannabis still holds a huge role in my ability to live my best life.

For anyone who believe that it fries brain cells & produces addiction I am here to call bullshit.

I have better cognitive than most & am not an addict with over 30 years of smoking weed. If you want to talk about brain cells dying and addiction we should look at big pharm & booze.

Not going to lie I am sure this blog post will raise some eyebrows.

For those who can be open to living life outside of cultural norms I hope this post helps guide your best life journey.

Bedridden to BAM: Guest Blog

Dillon-Surfing.jpg

By: V Capaldi & Dillon Druz I am a huge believer that life takes us where we are supposed to be. I know intentions can guide this journey & really work hard to live my life by this personal mantra.

The last 18 months I have grown to socialize very little. Having a digital media brand built around dedicating & sharing your life makes for a very public life. In addition being healthy is my full time job & a hard job. I treasure my alone & dog time often looking forward to when I can be private.

To assure I do not stop going out, networking or engaging weekly I developed the ritual of heading to The Bulletproof Cafe in Santa Monica.

I cannot express the amaze balls folks I meet there every time. The community it draws are my kind of people. It has become a little family that I appreciate very much.

As luck would have it this gal had the chance to speak to a young man I noticed was a regular just like me. His energy contagious. We got chatting one day & without hesitation I begged him to share his story with you all.

With great pride, respect and mad love I introduce a true inspiration, gentleman, miracle & my friend: Dillon Druz.

A special shout out to Dave Asprey for building a cafe that inspires community, conversation & education with some of the best damn food I have ever had. It supports the miracle that lives in all of us.

Hello. My name is Dillon Druz. I live consciously because if I want to thrive in life, I have to.

In 2007, I was diagnosed with Chiari Malformation.  This condition is a rare neurological brain disorder that affects everything from sight to balance.  I received brain surgery after the diagnosis and was bedridden for months.

Chiari Malformation turned my life upside down.  I went from being a top sponsored athlete to an Oxycontin addict.  I was lost, sick, and waiting to die.

dillon rock pic

I had daily migraines, chronic fatigue, and extremely low libido. I was suffering and drowning through life. These days I am healthy and sober.  I work full time. I can do almost everything I could do before my surgery.

Doctors told me I would be handicapped for life, but that has not been my experience.

All of my hard ships have led me to self-discovery and an inner healing journey.  Every trail & tribulation I have gone through has taught me many meaningful life lessons.

I would not trade my current life for anything nor wish it happened any other way!  Living conscious has led me to deep acceptance.

I firmly believe that if you show up for yourself boldly, then life will take care of itself. I have every reason to sit in self-pity, but I just can't allow that in my conscious. I am someone who doesn't handicap myself based on western beliefs.

I dance on my bike in the morning while biking Venice Beach.  I grooved to Kanye West's "30 Hours" from his new album The Life of Pablo this morning.

I absolutely love spin classes, surfing, and hiking.  I crave the outdoors and any situations that connect me to my true self.  Lately, though, I have been exercising much less.  Focusing on long fasts, diet, and cyrotherapy to mimic a similar beneficial stress response.

Possibilities.

My favorite word is keto.  I know, I know.  It's super cheesy, but ketosis has given me my life back.

I am listening to Kanye West. I truly admire his artistic and creative abilities.  His persona also cracks me up.  Being authentic and true to you is a major key in life.  Regardless of how that looks to the individual.

I get mindful on the regular!  I start the day by reading spiritual texts and conscious deep breathing. Then I meditate for at least 5 minutes with at least 1 longer meditation during the week.

One small step that has produced profound effects in my life was reducing carbohydrates from my diet and going ketogenic.  A low carb diet has tremendously improved my life.  It almost feels like my brain fires better now than it did pre surgery.

The return in investment this action has given me is nothing short of miraculous.  I have a new found zest for life and insurmountable hope for the future.

A mini hack I used to help me transition into this lifestyle was the use of exogenous ketones (I prefer KETO OS) as a brain fuel while taking a special form of magnesium (MagTech from Natural Stacks). These supplements made my transition effortless and sustainable.

I am extremely grateful for the time we are living in. The amount of information available to the general public is unbelievable. We live in a time where we can learn and heal our selves by applying information from other people’s experiences. I always recommend seeing a doctor first though so you know where to start!

Dillon Druz is the 2007 United States Bodyboarding Association National Champion. He was diagnosed with a rare brain disorder in 2008 and used functional medicine to bring himself back from a debilitating brain surgery. These days he does social media marketing and promotes health & wellness through his personal social platforms.

Hot NEW Products Review from Expo West

convention-copy.jpg

By: V Capaldi Anyone who has spent any time with me has had to endure my boring stories of building tech companies that including attending more trade shows yearly than I can even imagine. My team consisted of a group dedicated to just trade shows it was such a huge part of my business.

After building tech companies I opened a retail store dedicated to consciousness and once again found myself at trade shows, but just 4 a year.

Regardless the size, going to a trade show can be a daunting experience. I often relate it to walking down a busy NYC street filled with people and knowing not a single person. Many of us are used to walking down the street and knowing everyone.

Last week I attended my 1st ever Expo West. It happened to be a record attendance at 75K!  Talk about intimidation!

IMG_0004

In typical V fashion I arrived a day before the entire event opened up to tour the smaller "Hot Products" section when it opened on Thursday; which offered a nice step back into trade show life.

Friday all hell broke loss and Expo West was in full swing. Have mercy this show has everything you can imagine complete with free food and live music!

Words nor actions can begin to express how different this experience was for me compared to any trade show I have done before. Many of us who live in the conscious world got here because life dealt us a hand we decided not to lose.  Even though the odds were not in our favor we knew our hand was a winning hand. When no one else did. When everyone thought we were crazy. When the only person we could count on was ourselves.

Imagine being in an energy space of this group of poker players?!?

I found myself crying almost every booth I visited by the uplifting forces encountered within each of the companies I had the honor of meeting. Many of them have supported my wellness journey with their brands and it was a privilege to meet the faces behind the products.

IMG_9999

To make my life even more exciting finally my dear friend Vani Hara (aka. The Food Babe) and I met face to face in Venice on Wednesday before Expo West even kicked off. Needless to say all of this is the reason this newsletter is a little delayed. I am still in recovery mode.

Here is a round-up of my TOP PICKS of PRODUCTS:

IMG_0173

Crio Bru: This stuff is delicious! WOW!  For those looking for a coffee alternative I would highly recommend you consider this brand made from Cocoa Beans.  They have different roasts and each I sipped were exceptional.

IMG_0174

Fruit Bliss: The look of the figs pulled me into the booth.  The fruit from Fruit Bliss tastes and looks fresh picked. They give each piece of fruit a nice steam before packaging producing a quality product that is the best I have ever had.  Mother Nature would be proud.

IMG_0175

Gaia: Adrenal Health: This product is for my adult daughter. She has had a tough year and wonderful year at the same time. Leaving her fatigued and her adrenals screaming for attention. I was so excited to see the addition of the Jump Start knowing this may be exactly what she needs.  I love that all Gaia products are gluten free and certified to be.

FC_GutShot_WebBanner_v2

Farmhouse Culture: The Gut Shot:  Saw this and bought it for my kid at my local Whole Foods. She has always love pickle juice and this is designer juice the way I see it. Take a shot a day and let the gut begin to heal. They taste delicious too.  I would highly recommend adding this to your daily life.  Bacteria is the new black!

There were so many products to view and learn about my mind is still numb. However of all that I personally saw these are my TOP PICKS!  I hope you found this insightful and look forward to hearing your feedback.

F*ck Health Insurance

being-bold.jpg

By: V  Capaldi As the woman who professes to question the status quo at every turn my financial life has finally brought me to a place where I am questioning the cost of health insurance.

I was granted Medicare 2 years after becoming legally disabled from Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The monthly cost to me for both Medicare and Part D (Prescription Drugs) is roughly $230/month.

Within the 1st few months of being granted Medicare you have a "once in a lifetime" opportunity to get gap insurance. Gap insurance is supposed to cover the gaps in your existing insurance plan.  It is supposed to help assure you are covered in a time of great need. My gap insurance comes at the cost of $392/month.

Total health insurance = $622/monthly #WTF

I got This
I got This

This month I decided to take a bold step and say "bye-bye" to my gap insurance.

I think the narrative regarding insurance has to change.

I decided I am going to take that money and spend it on my kind of insurance.Which equates to approximately $7500/year!

The PaleoBOSS Lady Insurance Covers Yearly:

  • A Functional Medicine Doc
  • Blood Work
  • Fecal Testing
  • Supplements
  • Pilates
  • Tai Chi
  • Vacation

All of which coupled with a healthy conscious life will do more to insure my health than any company in a building that is all about waiting for disaster to happen so they can deny you because you did not read the fine print.

F that.

Bye bye insurance and hello brass balls. Once gain this BOSS believes: I got this.

An Invitation to Join "Propville"

An Invitation to Join "Propville"

yoga-props.jpg

By: V Capaldi I am someone who for most of her adult life has probably averaged more than 3 days a week working out. My mental and physical body require it and I would say I am addicted. These workouts have evolved, but one thing has always remained: my love of props. Using props during a workout & life offers a richer, deeper experience in many ways.

For some reason the mental conversation most of have regarding props are centered around defeat or lack of ability. I find the opposite to be true and believe my growing ability to thrive in the face of MS due to my willingness to use props in my life both physically & mentally.

IMG_6442
IMG_6442

A great example of the joy of using a prop during my workout is triangle pose in yoga. This pose is a huge necessary in my "Bag of Tricks" due to gait issues resulting from MS. However 9 out of 10 times the best outcome my body receives from triangle pose happens when assisted into the pose with a block. This pose incorporates so many different yet important variables that using a block is the best way to gain the maximum benefit of the pose. The experience of this pose is night and day without a block for my body.

Sure I can touch the ground and offer a beautiful triangle pose on command with no block needed.  This however is not the goal just getting into the pose. The goal is to be one with the pose.

Allowing for the complete experience often will land most of us in my favorite place: "Propville"

I literally have a box full of fun props for movement & life.  Each day before my morning workout I lay the choices of the day on the floor next to my yoga mat. This way once I am on the mat whatever I need is accessible.

TOP 7 PICKS:

  • I am Wonderfully Made:  My yoga mat is a prop in itself. I do all workouts starting and ending on my mat. This is a prop that reminds me why I am doing this and to take time to allow the workout to be felt and appreciated.  A huge step #1 on "Propville"
  • Necks are Nice: Another great tool is something under my neck for whenever I lay down. Many times I am in yoga watching row after row of folks hyper-extending their neck when laying down. I have a few options  beyond rolling my towel.  Almost every class someone asks me about my props which leads me to believe there is a need. Neck rolls are nice.
  • Save the Knees: Hello folks stop acting like kneeling is not a challenge.  If you have knee pain please put something under them.Save the knees & the bees (I digress). I have a few tricks to share if you do not want to buy a support like I use.  I sometimes fold my yoga mat double or my towel to support my sore knees.  Both are accessible & super easy to incorporate offering maximum benefits.
  • Cork Block:  This thing is hard as hell and I am in love, love, love. OMG!  That is why I love it because there is no doubt when using it that I feel sturdy. Having MS many times balance is an issue. Using a block that feels like a dead weight I love. Plus it most often is made of sustainable and recyclable material which is an added BAM.
  • Wonder Wall: Imagine that! Using a wall for help during a work out. I actually have a workout wall in every room of my house. I know you are jealous. So often people come over and ask why certain walls have nothing on them (but marks from me being a badass) & when I tell them because they are my work out walls it definitely brings a pause.  Workout walls rule and are FREE.
  • Chairs Care: The greatest invention behind the wheel maybe? Okay another blog post and I digress. Damn it. Use the damn chair when you need it. I use it to put my feet up in meditation, balance when getting into certain yoga poses & to keep me stable when stretching. I need to be very careful due to a torn meniscus and support is my friend. Without the support of a chair my home care would be lacking effectiveness big time.
  • Band Babe: I freaking love my bands. I use them all the time to assist in stretching, assist with clam pose and so much more. For a few dollars you can really do amazing strengthen training, stretching and so much more.
zen
zen

The moral of the story is to engage in your own narrative regarding props in your workout & life.  Make sure your reasons are not based on cultural norms & societal pressures which I believe for most of us to be the case.

Look at a packed yoga class and when the instructor asks if you need props no one moves. Yet when class ends half the room now has props the teacher handed them because their experience would be better with them. Nothing else folks.

Don't be a workout douche and give your body what it needs.  Some loving support every once in a while to show it how much you care.

I know you do not want to miss another blog post from this gal! If you have not please hit subscribe and join my crew!

We talk about consciousness across all things in an effort to up the volume of life and raise the roof on living. BAM!

A Sugar, Dairy & Gluten Free Treat: Apples Ahoy!

apple-chocolate.jpg

By: V Capaldi I am doing my 1st Whole Life Challenge and loving it. 8 weeks of clean eating all in an effort to stop my addiction to honey.

Yes folks I have a honey addiction.

It used to be jars upon jars of honey. Now we have no longer maintained that level of addiction, but having honey in my diet often is not a good look for this body.

Yearly after the holiday honey feast I do a detox.  This year and probably next it is a Whole Life Challenge which means my lifestyle is clean and mean right now. However I still like to have an after dinner treat no matter how much I detox.

Here is my latest "go-to" treat that is sweet with nothing added beyond what mother nature puts in the fruit.

Simple and fun to make for the whole damn family. I like to set up a topping bar and let everyone have fun creating their favorite treats:

Top 5 Helpful Tips to Detox Your Home!

household-cleaners.jpg

By: V Capaldi Not going to lie it took me a few years of living a conscious life regarding food, movement and mindfulness before I started to look at the products I used in my home. Little did I know I was continuing to expose my body to high levels of carcinogens. In 2012 the Environmental Working Group (EWG) released a list of the most toxic chemical ridden house cleaning products and even those that say natural and safe are not.

Did you know that over 50% of household products contain harmful ingredients? Many of them carcinogens?

People ask me all the time about my road to health and miracle life status. As a Wahls Warrior I am very strict about what foods enter my body and eat supporting my cellular health. However food is one part of the equation. Lifestyle and day to day choices are the reason for my miracle status. My life is 100% conscious. There is nothing that happens in a day without thought and conscious awareness.

Questioning the status quo is ultimately responsible for my miracle life.

I find it harder and harder to keep my mouth quiet about the level of toxic exposure I see in what people eat,  products they use in their home and on their body.  In 2015 I made it my business to find products that were safe, effective and did not break the bank.  This effort is not easy and I learned the hard way once again that packaging lies.  My entire house was filled with store brand 'green products' where once I scratched the surface I learned these were marketed to me based on lies.

This blog post is to help you navigate how to detox your home!

Top Toxin List:

  1. Triclosan: Most hand soaps labeled 'antibacterial" which is a probable carcinogen
  2. Phthalatese: Anything fragrant even toilet paper
  3. Perchloroethylene: Spot and stain removers
  4. Quarternary Ammonium Compounds: Fabric softeners
  5. 2-Butoxyethanol: Cleaners from kitchen to window
  6. Ammonia: Cleaners for bathroom & kitchen
  7. Chlorine: Mildew removers, whiteners and drinking water
  8. Sodium Hydroxide: Oven and drain cleaners

Top 5 De-Toxic Cleaning Tips:

  1. Vinegar: This is a great household cleaning product that is non-toxic, cost effective and gets the job done. Add to a bucket of warm water to mop floors to a sparkle. Use with newspaper on windows for a wow moment.
  2. Essential oils: Vinegar, warm water & add a few drops to a spray bottle and get busy all around the home!
    1. Tea Tree oil is my go too for killing germs and keeping my house on point.
    2. Lavender oil is my fragrance maker and adds calming effects all over my house. Great to spritz on your pillow before bedtime too.
    3. Peppermint oil keeps the bugs away in a healthy wonderful smelling way.
    4. Baking soda:  This can make a powerful cleaning paste to help get out tough stains from ovens, toilet bowls and tile.
    5. Lemon:  Add to warm water for a great kitchen and appliance cleaner. Love to clean my refrigerator using this mixture
    6. Bon Ami: Coconut and palm oil cleaner that works great and keeps my sinks and tubs shining bright.

It would be great to think all of you are now going to completely change how you care for your house and begin many DIY projects to make that happen.  If in case this does not happen I am happy to report I have done the hard work for you and identified products I can 100% stand behind to use safely in your home, with your family and yourself. Grab Green: These products clean effectively, safely and are perfect in every way. I have been testing them since October 2015 and have not been disappointed at all.

Here are my TOP 5 Grab Green Picks:

Garbage Disposal LOVING: I know you can do a lemon, but I live in a rental and even when I owned never really trust the disposal for hard core skins like lemon.  I even had a disposal that was supposed to chew a penny and it made terrible noises when I put lemon down. These are my soft, fluffy sweet smelling toxin free alternative. Love once a week showing the disposal some loving.

gg_garthy12_77101_front

Laundry Pod POW:  They get the job done and what I like the most is the shit dissolves people. OMG I am so over getting my clothes out of the laundry with detergent clumps. You know what I am talking about. I live where my laundry does not even offer hot water or warm and these suckers work magic.  I get unscented and highly recommend this. My kid I gave a set of stuff at Christmas to open her mind to a toxic house and she loves this and even commented. Which is saying something.

gg_3in1ff24_100019_front_5
gg_3in1ff24_100019_front_5

Bleach Alternative BAM:Okay remember I am a 5 STAR **** rated Cozymeal chef?!?! Well part of my job is washing aprons. White freaking aprons after folks have been in a cooking competition which often they have no idea they are coming too. Wine has been involved all, but one class too. These suckers come to me looking like a war was fought. Which it kind of was, but I digress.  Damn it.   Any who!  White, sparkling and good as new every time with this action happening. Jump on this shit and say bye bye bleach or I will hunt you down. It is so toxic. (Funny small picture here due to being 100% technically challenged. Double damn it.)

gg_baff24_102043_front-2
gg_baff24_102043_front-2

Dish Soap DYNAMITE:  This shit lathers! It really does. I hate to admit but the toxic free stuff typically doesn't and I miss the bubbles. Those tiny bubbles are the fun of dish washing. I do not  have a dishwasher and can tell you that when you teach food for a living it sucks when you do not have bubbles. I digress again. Grease cutting, wonderful smelling and a bubble making BAM for this dish soap.

gg_dsthy16_75101_front_1
gg_dsthy16_75101_front_1

Straw Brush BAM:  I love drinking out of a straw. What can I say. I have no dishwasher and these little devils are the cutest things. I use it to clean my baby Chemex too so for you coffee Chemex people listen up.

straw_cleaner_1

Long story short it is time to really start questioning the status quo regarding your home and what you are exposing yourselves too. The risk you are taking to be clean! Go outside and roll in the dirt. That is how I am living life OUTSIDE!

Big Anniversary & Squash Pudding

S86A0637.jpg

By V Capaldi

How is that for a blog post title? Kinda sums up my life right now.  2 years ago this week I stood up for my beliefs and  person and made the decision to follow my heartand passion to lead a conscious life.  This gal said goodbye to the idea that healthcare is only for those who can afford it and embarked on a healthcare is self-care life.  In typical V fashion, November 2013 I jumped and decided to see if my Bag of Tricks was filled with enough tools to lead an empowered life.

Today the brand of PaleoBOSS Lady™ (PBL) shares tools of empowerment with over

50, 000 people daily & growing!

Happy 2nd Anniversary to PBL!

I could not be more excited, proud and certain of the direction the brand known as PaleoBOSS Lady™ is heading. Literally the movement is growing everyday with opportunities continuing to present themselves that continue to spread the PBL message in an accessible culturally relevant way.

The cultural norm is what the brand of PBL questions every day.

A huge message of the brand is sharing with others how to change their narrative.  One narrative we would like to change is that 25% of children are taking medication in America.

[embed]https://youtu.be/Axpvc3iDXB0[/embed]

Are you really okay with this?  Children are our hope to sustainable change.

“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”   Hippocrates

The brand of PBL takes us back to the kitchen offering experiences beyond eating.  Mediums like the soon to be released South Philly Paleo Cookbook shares food, family and culture in a way that not only provides insight, recipes and games, but begins to lay the foundation for others to envision their cultural path to consciousness.

Click here to find out more about the South Philly Paleo Cookbook and our Indiegogo campaign to support this.

PBL had the opportunity to be filmed for a movie that will share my life story. This film is set to release April 2016 in 1100 theaters worldwide and is beyond surreal.  During the filming I lived with Dr. Wahls & her family where she ntroduced me to a dessert that is simply out of this world: Squash Pudding.  This sugar and dairy free dessert was delicious and super easy to make.

Dr. Terry Wahls Squash Pudding (adapted from memory)

Ingredients:

Directions:

  • Put one can of coconut in refrigerator for up to 4 hours with 24 being ideal.
  • Add all ingredients, but refrigerated coconut milk to Vitamix/blender of choice until creamy and mixed.
  • Add water to desired consistency.
  • Spoon into cups and place in refrigerator for at least 4 hours.
  • 5 minutes before serving take canned coconut milk from the refrigerator placing all, but the liquid into a mixing bowl.
  • Using a hand mixer whip into a cream adding honey and pinch of cinnamon.
  • When ready to serve add whipped cream to the top with cinnamon sprinkles if you like.

Dr. Wahls used a Vitamix to make the pudding and I will be using a Cuisinart.

Drinking it Neat, Dancing on Bars & Living Life Like a BAM

S86A0497.jpg

By: V Capaldi It is amazing how once you identify higher purpose many if not all of the ideals that guided life choices change. I literally do not have many things in my life that even remotely resemble my world even 5 years ago.  I was the party girl who liked to drink it neat, dance on bars and occasionally was known to get a little too wild.

Now I follow my circadian rhythm for heaven's sake!

It is so funny how when you turn the auto pilot of life off and really truly engage in conversation with yourself you realize how little of what you do day to day resonates with who you are. My life was based on consumer driven values that today are the bane of my existence.

S86A0315
S86A0315

I struggle to step foot into a Target, Costco and seldom if ever support large chains.  It is amazing this is my reality since I am the poorest I have been in my life to date.  This alone serves as a perfect example of how much my life has changed.   My life is guided by moral consciousness and a value system that filled with the role of activist.

I used to be mad at myself for the consumer driven values that drove my former professional life. Then I realized the skill set that my life has today happened during that time and prepared me for my role and responsibility as PaleoBOSS Lady®.  Today I wear it as a badge of honor and pride that I have successfully build nearly a dozen small businesses in my lifetime.  This time it is a little different as I am the face of a movement to create conscious awareness about life and living and that means its a BAM life all day every day for me.

Lately the word on the street is that this crazy ass bitch is great in front of the camera.  Who knew?

You find that out by being in front of the camera and that is what has been happening in my current life.  Two of the folks I have the pleasure of working with are both doing a crowd funding event to support their efforts.   Please know that millions have been raised  to support such campaigns by donating the smallest amount. Change can happen $1 at a time and if you would consider any amount it would be truly a conscious act that can support huge change.  Both of these fine groups are creating movies that focus on an aspect of food as medicine or poison.  You all know my miracle story and how this has served to be the truth in my journey.

Food as Medicine makes healthcare accessible to all.

The current status quo regarding healthcare is accessible to only those who can afford it, does nothing to recognize culture or environmental history at all.  This type of system is based on consumer driven principles alone. The only way to create sustainable change is through awareness.  Both of these crowd funding campaigns do just that.

Check out their video's and use the links to support my friends.

I am proud to say PBL will be featured in both films and I thank you so much for your consideration. Sharing this is always recommended and as always cursing is free in all of my work.  Lets raise the roof on life together and stop a consumer driven healthcare system and make it a system tosupport wellness.

You can support their funding here with a 21-day meditation challenge. Details here.

You can support their funding here through KickStarter. Details here.

I really hope you will consider taking this one small step in supporting others who are working hard to create awareness in an effort to bring sustainable change that heals.  Please consider subscribing to this blog and sharing this with others. Autumn Aromatherapy

Autumn Aromatherapy

autumn-e1443275858892.jpg

As you mayknow, V and I worked together in a magical little boutique she created, called Sanity. One of the main components of the store was a mindfulness and well-being section populated with aromatherapy products, handcrafted wall & table fountains, zen gardens, and other wonderful creations designed to help you slow down and look inward. Aromatherapy seemed like a lot of mumbo jumbo in our conservative little corner of Delaware, but it quickly caught on and was our strongest and most enduring section of the shop. Every season, V and I would offer workshops in aromatherapy to help people bring a bit of natural healing to their daily lives and aid in meditation and mindfulness. We’ve been chatting recently about starting this tradition back up!! So here I am … with a few tips on ways to use essential oils in this beautiful, transitional season of fall.

Why Autumn Aromatherapy?

As we move between the seasons, our bodies and minds also go through transitions. Spring and summer tend to be outwardly focused for mind and body… and now it’s time to start looking inward. Autumn is a wonderful time to begin a simple meditation practice in order to help prepare you for our seasonal “hibernation” in winter. I’ve always been a fan of Aromaland’s Meditation Blend for bringing in the the fall and winter. Comprised of Frankincense, Myrrh, Ylang Ylang, Sandalwood, Cistus Labdanum, this blend is warm and spicy, and consists of many oils which would be quite expensive to buy individually. Frankincense has a calming effect on the emotions, and has been known to slow down & deepen the breath… perfect for inducing that meditative state! The other oils in this blend have similar properties of relaxation, as well as some more practical properties like: antifungal, antiviral, antiseptic… perfect for cleansing the air in your home as we head into a time where we will be indoors more often.

diffuser

Autumn Oils and Their Properties

Speaking of being indoors... how about setting a healthy, welcoming, and fragrant greeting for your family and guests every time they enter? There are hundreds of ways to use essential oils in your home to create a wonderful atmosphere and promote health & well-being. I highly recommend The Complete Book of Essential Oils & Aromatherapy by Valerie Ann Worwood. She dedicates a whole chapter to this!! Some of the most popular oils for use in scenting the home in autumn also have healthy benefits.

  • Cedar (Cedrus Atlanticus): known to be a powerful antiseptic…particularly for bronchial infections. Definitely good to diffuse!!
  • Clove Bud (Eugenia caryophyllata): antibacterial, antiseptic, and analgesic… clove is believed to help prevent illness and infection. In fact, it is so powerful that it has been used to sterilize surgical instruments in field hospitals.
  • Ginger Root (Zingiber officinalis): Stimulating, warming, aphrodisiac and tonic, many people already know that it helps to soothe the stomach. In a room diffuser, ginger adds a wonderful warm & spicy note to a fall blend.
  • Orange (Citrus Aurantium… other variations also available): antidepressant and mildly sedative, yet at the same time, orange is also refreshing and rejuvenating! Perfect to diffuse when someone in the house is organizing bills or studying for an exam!! Its aroma inspires and brings fresh energy & clears the mind. Citrus oils help to eliminate emotional confusion and are believed to increase one’s sense of humor and well-being. Definitely a win!!

In addition to the book above, I swear by a few other reference sources in my home, and these are where I have gathered most of the information included in this little post:

While therapeutic grade essential oils are an amazing, natural way to promote wellness in your home, always be aware that many oils have strict usage guidelines in order to be considered safe to the body. Look into the specific properties of each oil you are using to see if they are safe for children, pets, or pregnant women… and whether they should be used in diffusers/inhalations, baths or directly on the skin.

I look forward to chatting with you about other amazing uses for essential oils over the fall and winter! Let me know what you are interested in, and I will write a post about it!

Happy Fall!

Friday's Friend: Tony Ferro, founder of Change MS

ChangeMSfinal2blk1-e1441990637585.jpg

For this week's Friday's Friend, PBL is so proud to pass the mic to Tony Ferro, founder of Buffalo, NY based non-profit Change MS.  Change MS was created to help people with Multiple Sclerosis feel better physically, mentally and emotionally.  Tony is healing his body through food, movement and mindfulness, and is here to share his story with us.

By: Tony Ferro

MS/Multiple Sclerosis: two simple letters that are short for a complicated condition. Anyone who has MS can relate to the challenges and fears that come when you hear those words for the very first time.

As serious as the disease is, the bond it creates with those that share the same diagnosis is amazing. Anyone I have ever spoken to about the day of diagnosis has the same story, same emotions, same sense of loneliness and not knowing where to turn. It is hard to stay positive when you hear such devastating news. But the moment you leave that doctor’s office is when the journey should begin.

This disturbing news saved my life.   You’re probably thinking, how can being diagnosed with a disease save one’s life? Well, I can assure you my diagnosis turned into a blessing and instead of looking at it as the end; it was my opportunity for a new beginning!

Perception and positive outlook on your situation is key!

If I could give anyone with MS one piece of advice it would to have the right ATTITUDE! One thing my doctors say (and I agree with), is if they could bottle up my attitude and prescribe it, they would. Although, not one of them agrees with me not taking any medications, they are all pleased with my progress and the way I look at things. I have always been an optimistic person, no matter what the situation, and that has helped. Talking about myself isn’t easy for me, but I’ve learned that the more I speak about it, the more positive I am with my own situation. I also find that by speaking my truth, it allows others to open up and talk about their experiences.

Community Matters!

No one should feel alone! One thing that I found lacking in the doctor’s office on the day of my diagnosis was the sense of community. I wanted to talk to someone who had been through the new things I was experiencing, but instead I was left alone with some preprinted literature and my own thoughts… and the answers I could find on Google. WTF is that?! No one should be told something that serious and be sent off to fend for themselves! In my experience, this burden is the heaviest thing to carry with you; holding things in and trying to hide our new fate can cause more harm than good.

Be your own advocate & Embrace Change!

I often ask people after sharing our MS stories, “what are you doing differently now that you have MS”? I press them to consider things like… How are you being proactive and handling the diagnosis? Are you only taking advice from your doctor or are you more aggressive with getting multiple sources of information and not wanting to settle for the normal status quo?

We are an over-medicated and under-educated society. Do I have all the answers? Absolutely not. But leaving the doctor’s office early in 2012 and seeing how devastated my mother was, followed by close friends and of course my family, I found new strength. I was going to be ok. It fueled a thirst for knowledge that I never experienced before.

I intend to keep learning and kicking MS’s ass. But all in all, I’m looking forward to learning about myself. I recently attended a health seminar and met amazing people with inspiring success stories. I also met one of my idols, Dr. Terry Wahls and a new mentor, V Capaldi (or the woman you know as PaleoBOSS Lady®). I can’t help but ask … what if they listened? What if they settled for what they were supposed to do according to their doctor’s orders and ignored their heart? What if they didn’t go above and beyond what they were told? They wouldn’t have these stories to share; they wouldn’t be able to inspire others to do the same.

Don’t settle!! Don’t stop questioning! And don’t stop believing in the power of you.

Through his organization, Tony and the Change MS team have created an amazing community dedicated to raising awareness about MS, providing resources and support,  and empowering people to live their best life.

By: V Capaldi At this point I am pretty sure we all know who is my hero, mentor and friend that provided the tools for me to get my life back!  Yup, Dr. Terry Wahls and The Wahls Protocol!  Long before The Wahls Protocol I became a Wahls Warrior.  For over 1400+ days I have been a faithful, devoted and successful miracle under the guidelines for wellness outlined in the best-selling book, The Wahls Protocol by Dr. Terry Wahls.

In-Person Symposium 2015

This wellness bible is available in both hardback and paperback and

I truly believe it is a must for every household's library.

Many of the concepts, idea's and components of the protocol are lifestyle based on conscious awareness that involve far more than food.  This life changing book explains how and why we got here regarding health and wellness and in addition informs us how to live, eat and move based on our cellular level needs.  An approach like the Wahls Protocol puts you in the driver seat and removes many of the victim filled outcomes the majority of us live with.

In fact 1 in 3 Americans are legally disabled with The Wahls Protocol

poised to change this without drugs or high healthcare costs.

Healthcare Bible

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of seeing 1st hand the power of Dr. Wahls, her family and The Wahls Protocol teachings to change lives beyond any healthcare science I have ever witnessed.  None of what took place at the symposium was based around consumer driven principles or sponsored by a drug company as in traditional healthcare.  Instead all was based around accessibility with self-care tools of empowerment shared by the buckets!

Changing the World w/ Dr. Terry Wahls

Changing the World w/ Dr. Terry Wahls

IMG_6192.jpg

By: V Capaldi Barely back in one piece and still on an emotional high that will take me at least a month to recover from.  The 2nd Annual Dr. Terry Wahls in-person Symposium just ended and I am speechless.  Simply finding it hard to socialize, idealize and realize all that happened in the last 6 days.  My body has demanded so much attention since I am home my post may seem jumbled and all over the place since my person has had little time to process. #damnit

The 1st thing I want to say that was the most amazing outcome was to have the entire Wahls Family present for the symposium!  Mind blowing they all participated in a BIG ASS way and how much this elevated the bonds, learning and experience of the Wahls Warrior community and how deep it goes.

A huge highlight was to officially meet Zach Wahls.  He has been a hero of mine long before I realized his mother was Dr. Wahls.  Zach opened and MC'd with the level of professionalism, heart and soul the WORLD has grown to love. His  presence is warm, welcome and commanding just like his mothers.  Zach added a huge element to the entire event that was magical.

Zebby whose art is beyond words in my limited vocabulary. She is a young lady who portrays a large dose of self expression, is complex, captivating and beautiful.  In addition Zebby held a key role facilitating testimonials of those like me who have been given the gift of hope and healing from The Wahls Protocol.

11913895_10153472359002279_9040575386894417246_n

Last, but not least Dr Wahls wife, Jackie shared with much vulnerability her life as a partner of Dr. Wahls and MS.  The bond that was witnessed by each person in the room between these two was deeper than anything I have ever felt or experienced and I am sure I do not stand alone in this feeling.  At one point Jackie shared, to a tear filled room, how she fell in love with Terry's "eye's and heart and that MS did not change that."  Amazing, amazing, amazing.

We were also gifted with another panel discussion that included couples dealing with both life threatening sickness and disease.  Both of these couples gave us full access to their personal lives and how they manifested their healing outcome.  Tears of sorrow, joy and determination where shared by everyone and after all of this I knew each of us had forever changed and become one.

When you live with disease being vulnerable in community is

never really experienced and these events brought me personally to a place of emotion

that lifted my soul to a higher level.

This years event was about twice the size of last and if offered triple the punch.  A day longer and larger community brought lots of energy and was felt by everyone.  As of today all indications show this outcome to almost be universal with about 1/3 already signed up for next year.

To be disabled, alone and often isolated in my struggles there is great strength in knowing that I will once again see my FAMILY in wellness and knowing when.  The Dr. Wahls Symposiums are a life line and intergral part of my wellness plan and this year solidified this reality.

I recommend you all start now saving and plan to attend next year.

This is a must for the warrior in all of us!

By: PaleoBOSS Lady® How it it Friday already?  Have mercy time is flying so quickly regardless team PBL is super stoked to introduce you to our Friday Friend, Jennifer Robins, aka Predominately Paleo. Like many of us Jennifer became conscious about the foods she ate as a result of being diagnosed with many illnesses that were dictating her life and the message was not good. As friends do Jennifer has been kind enough to share with us a sneak peek recipe for Chipotle Stuffed Mushrooms:

Ingredients:

2 lbs (908 g) whole white mushrooms, cleaned and stemmed

1 medium onion, diced 1 lb (454 g)

pastured breakfast sausage (or best quality available)

1 cup (240 ml) homemade mayonnaise (or high-quality store-bought)

1 chipotle pepper in adobo sauce, minced

1⁄2 tsp adobo sauce

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C, or gas mark 5). Place the stemmed mushrooms on a foil-lined baking sheet. In a large skillet, sauté the onion and sausage over high heat until the sausage is cooked through, about 8 minutes. While the sausage is cooking, puree the mayonnaise, chipotle pepper and adobo sauce in a blender or food processor. Once the sausage is cooked through, remove from the heat and stir in the chipotle mayo. Spoon the filling into the mushroom caps, being careful not to overfill. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the stuffing starts to brown nicely along with the mushrooms.

5 Tips to Thrive Like a "BOSS"

When you live With a Disease of Any Kind! By: PaleoBOSS Lady®

The other day while I was in the shower disgusted that LA is having rare horrific weather a blog post came to me. The mental conversation I was having I somehow suspect many others living with a disease might also engage in from time to time.  This prompted me to think this might be a good time to share some tips and tricks I have learned in my life commitment toward changing the narrative to manifest my desired life outcome.

IMG_5949
IMG_5949

Due to an offshore hurricane we had rare 90% humidity for days which sucks a wet one.  Living with Multiple Sclerosis this is not a good look and quite frankly just blows. My body has no ability to regulate temperature and overheats very easily. My most disabling MS attack was a result of a morning walk along the beach in 2001 when the humidity was high and my body was unable to cool down resulting in one of the worst health nightmares of my life to date. #ohitgetswild

For the last few months I have been walking along the waters edge about 3 days a week for my movement, mindfulness and grounding work. I so look forward to this more than any other part of my day because that is how I roll.  Sadly I have had to curtail this due to the weather and even though the weather is not as severe I am still unable to resume.  It is just over the edge of acceptable humidity levels for my body even at 60%.

Every morning I wake up hopeful as a mother and then realize that not only can't I walk I also should not really be do much during  warm weather conditions.  So not a good look on any freaking level.  Which for anyone who knows me personally knows this is a hard ass thing for this Type A overachiever!

As a result I have literally caught myself several times a day having these types of conversations with myself:  "It's only 70% humidity in the afternoon I got this?" or "If I am walking before the sun is up that is a good look?" and finally the most rational "California humidity is not like the east coast humidity cause this is the best damn coast." All of these are unhealthy conversations that if acted upon could potentially have an outcome that could set me back or worse yet change the landscape of my current independent life in a heartbeat.

Living with disease always presents the risk of making a "false move" and how it tends to effect our lives longer than we ever imagined.  I never in my wildest dreams would have believed that a walk on the beach on a humid day in 2001 would take almost 14 years to recover from!

How does one avoid these often life changing "false moves" when living with disease of any kind? #damnit

While in the shower mind racing a mile a minute I put together my:

Top 5 TIPS for Living with Chronic Disease

1. Define Your Desired Life Outcome:  As my dear friend, hero and mentor, Dr. Terry Wahls, talks about in her book The Wahls Protocol real change has to come from an internal motivating source to be successful. The best way to attain this level of success it to focus on identifying our higher purpose or desired life outcome.

Engage in conversation with yourself to really define a desired life outcome is key to thriving in the face of disease.  Without conscious conversation defining dreams and desires life runs on autopilot and many of us become victims of our disease rather than peacefully co-existing.

2.  Develop an Action Plan:Once you have defined a higher purpose how are you going to get there? Break down the steps with a well defined action plan for the most successful outcome.  Making sure each step maintainable and sustainable.  These two aspects are key to the success of this step.

Often many of us go from nothing to "all in" and this seldom works.  Small, consistent and well thought out action toward a desired outcome lends itself to a higher rate of sustainable success.  Rather than jump head 1st without a parachute it is best to go slow and steady with a well defined path.  Plot out baby steps up the latter to success and be willing to change course as needed.

3.  Build Community:  Community is the ground in which I stand and responsible for my current miracle status.  Without the support of community most challenges in life become mountains many of us cannot climb.   The support of friends, family, organizations and groups are key to any life successes.

Often when living with disease one feels isolated and alone. By seeking and engaging in community you can quickly overcome feelings of loneliness and defeat to begin taking steps toward effectively manifesting a higher purpose.

4.  Changing the Narrative: Being open to changing the lens in which you view all things to accommodate and peacefully coexist with disease is a key element to success. Many times we are so fixated on what we already know we forget to ask about what we don't.  When we allow ourselves to be comfortable with a fluid narrative the path to higher purpose is more like a tree that grows around something in it's way, but continues to grow instead of slowing dying due to the obstacle before it.

5.  Get Conscious:  Most of us live an unconscious life and you have heard me say it time and again. Without owning our life and actions chronic disease is in the driver seat and you are the passenger.  The status quo is not an effective way to manage any disease.  By questioning the status quo you allow your person to often think outside the box and open yourself up to idea's that often would be missed or overlooked by an unconscious existence.

If PaleoBOSS Lady had not been searching the internet for nutrition based outcomes for MS I never would have found Dr. Wahls Tedx Talk which laid the foundation for the miracle I am today. In questioning the status quo I was able to find my hero and miracle outcome.

They say 1 in 3 are projected to be disabled by 2018 whereas today about 1 in 5 are disabled.  Many of us live with this reality due to our unconscious acts in our autopilot life and are living in a world based on consumer driven idea's only.  If each of us would begin to really question simple things like:

What time we go to bed?

How many hours of sleep we have?

What we eat for our meals?

How many meals we have a day?

What we apply to our bodies, brush our teeth with and the list goes on we might find out that a lot of these things would not be happening in the way they are now which often will produce a different outcome.  The simple act of questioning the status quo many times produces the outcomes needed to manifest your life.

Applying all 5 of these idea's are required for my miracle life and I would venture to believe the same would hold true for each of us.  This process and practice is a daily initiative that defines my person and my day.

As often happens we experience unexpected outcomes in addition to the intended and it seems these steps would hold true in this regard. I am not going to lie and let you in on a little known secret: living with disease in this way simplifies life!  Yup!  Which is an oxymoron when you are compromised and especially as you age.

When you question the status quo everything somehow becomes simple, pure and innocent and life becomes fresh and essential. Life becomes something you LIVE with your eyes wide open welcoming every second!

Damn it.

Thank you and I am honored you want to join the PBL party. We are going  to have fund raising consciousness and eyebrows at the same time.

DO NOT JUDGE. NO ASSHOLES ALLOWED.  THE END. #icurse Almost immediately after my diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) I started using marijuana to treat my symptoms and it still continues to this day.  Which was a huge issue for me because I was raised by a mother who was addicted to prescription drugs my whole life.  On one hand I was saying no to Valium which docs freely wanted to give me, but willing to use illegal drugs to heal.  This became a huge issue for many in my family as they say my decision and need to use marijuana as the gateway to be becoming an addict like my mother. I saw it as a saving grace for this not to happen.  Because marijuana is illegal most closest to me considered me a drug addict rather than someone holistically trying to live with MS and it's horrific symptoms. #onesmallstep

From the onset of MS becoming my life partner it brought with it what I call "under-skin jumping."  Basically it felt like my limbs were jumping around all the time in every direction.  As a result of this feeling my body was constantly trying to stop the limbs from 'jumping' and I lived with the feeling of constantly trying to hold them down & in place.  My 'jumping' was so severe that I could not do acupuncture because the needles would move so much they would eventually bend from the constant movement.  Good times had by all when this happened.

Until I moved to California in 2006 I broke the law and smoked marijuana daily to control these symptoms.   Little did I know until recently how much marijuana was really helping in my life beyond 'jumping.'  I just learned in the last few months how much marijuana relieved many symptoms related to MS. For 28 years I spoked marijuana almost daily. Everywhere I want and everyone who knew me was aware I used pot as medicine in my life with MS. Whether they agreed or not they knew if I was around there was a chance weed was on my person. #ohitgetswild

As luck would have it following The Wahls Protocol I healed from almost all of my symptoms related to living with MS. The limb jumping slowly but surely left my body and I no longer lived with this 'jumping' sensation. In   2015 I decided to stop smoking pot after the symptoms that I used marijuana to treat were no longer in my life.

Little did I know how much more the use of marijuana was helping.

The end of April I rented a guest house in LA and moved in 2 days before heading to Austin for PaleoFX.  Literally I moved in, unpacked my boxes and then quickly proceeded to pack a suitcase to start a month of assorted traveling as PaleoBOSS Lady.  So excited I was to head to my 2nd year of PaleoFX! #paleocommunityrocksbigtime

The plane takes off at LAX and all of a sudden an MS symptom I had not known in over 4 years returns and it is the scariest of all: throat rigidity. Yup the mother of all symptoms happens when we reach 'our cruising altitude' and results in a strong charlie horse in my throat.  Unable to swallow or stop the throat spams I literally panic realizing I am on a plane, traveling alone and unable to speak to share what is happening to me.  My throat is spasming like a mother and I have nothing on my person to help relieve this almost foreign symptom from MS. #damnit

I massage the area, calm my shit and slowly the spasms subsides. I sit in fear for the remainder of the flight especially the landing.  Convinced the atmospheric pressure caused the spasm I wonder if landing will bring the same result.  Happily it did not and once on the ground in Austin I kissed it.  Thankful that the flight reality was not worse and that I am okay.

IMG_0489
IMG_0489

When I get home I immediately call my doctor who prescribes Baclofen for me to take before and after flights to relieve the spasms.  This is such a defeat for me since it took me over 1.5 years to ween off of high doses of Baclofen that I took for years to treat my bodily spasms and was my last MS drug to kick to the curb since becoming a Wahls Warrior.  However the scary reality of throat rigidity and 2 upcoming plane rides were enough for me to give in and resume Baclofen in my life. Honestly with each plane ride that I took without issue I was grateful that I had Baclofen back in my 'Bag of Tricks.'

Traveling stops and I wean off the Baclofen but the throat rigidity continues to haunt me. In addition I lose feeling on the left side of my face & the area from my knee to ankle and restless leg starts to come back into my life. I am now not getting on planes or traveling but yet symptoms that were distant memories are coming back and piling on top of one another.  I am scared and surprised this is happening. #doubledamnit

What is causing this to happen?

Living a conscious life not much happens that I am not aware of and how it may or may not effect my body.  I looked for days at my life since the throat issues came back and what could have caused them if it was not the change in pressure caused by flying.  I knew I had just moved and the house became my focus. Sure enough my new landlord had been spraying highly toxic chemicals in the house I moved for roach control (another blog post for this but know I have moved again to a non toxic home without roaches)!  The air travel was enough to wake up my throat rigidity and the continued exposure to toxic chemicals created a petri dish for other MS related symptoms to follow.

So I did an experiment.

I smoked weed for 3 days one weekend to see what result if any it would have on my body.  The throat jumping stopped immediately and the other symptoms started to slowly go away.  They would all be gone for about 2-4 hours after smoking and some would return in a less threatening form.  I stopped smoking again for 3 days and all of them returned to their full blown nightmare reality.  For the 1st time this BOSS realized how much pot helped MS symptoms beyond 'limb jumping.'

FullSizeRender 2

For some reason initially I felt mentally defeated that I started to smoke weed again. I was so proud to have gone off all medications for the treatment of MS.  Then I realized this too may pass.   It was toxic chemical exposure that caused the symptoms to come back. Weed is the treatment that is helping until my body calms down enough to let go of their death grip on my symptoms. History has shown for me as a Wahls Warrior that these symptoms can leave my body and remain gone as long as my conscious life reality is not effected.

Smoking a little daily to treat the symptoms and it continues to help.  My usage and need are getting less and less each day as my toxic load continues to diminish.  However I am certain the marijuana will always be in my 'Bag of Tricks.'  This medicinal plant has provided me life changing healing for most of my years living with MS and continues to be a much better option than any pill a doc has ever prescribed.

The moral conflict associated with using weed I am over and think that the future continues to look bright for legalization to happen universally in the USA. I hope that many will realize the power to heal both mentally and physically using marijuana holds.  I really think it is time for all of us to stop the demonization of pot and can we all just say AMEN TO THE WEED!

We should instead be having this critical eye on all the drugs and drug companies and leave mother nature alone!

So hopefully I have raised an eyebrow or two or three with this post.  If so I would love it if you could subscribe to my blog!

The community of PBL is the ground in which I stand and your support means the world to me. #truth

Please consider it and never miss another hair raising post!  Namaste my friend.

7 Simple Swaps for Health Without Big Diet Changes

24.-Slow-Cooker-Short-Ribs-with-Celery-Root-Puree.jpg

  By: Dr. Mark Hyman

Your kitchen might be under the cruel reign of the food industry. When you remove the sugary, processed foods that hold your weight and health hostage and replace them with real, whole foods, you have a chance to stage a revolution and reclaim your kitchen.

Getting the obstacles to weight loss and health out of your way will transform your kitchen into a place of true nourishment and healing.

In fact, taking back our kitchens and embracing the act of cooking real food is probably the single most important thing that any one person can do to create a healthy, sustainable food system. It is also a magical alchemy that transforms individual ingredients into ambrosia and pleasure.

My philosophy is to “Eat real food.” So the best thing to do immediately is to take an afternoon to hunt and gather in your kitchen. Be merciless, and throw out any products that are not real food. Toss all highly processed, factory-manufactured Frankenfoods. Keep and going forward, choose only fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds, and lean animal proteins such as fish, chicken, and eggs.

Now, I understand that not everyone is ready for or wishes to undertake such a dramatic change. That doesn't mean you need to take an either-or approach and succumb to the processed, sugary foods that contribute to diabesity.

A few simple upgrades can transform your diet without radically altering your life. While simple, these seven replacements can create dramatic changes in your diet that don't feel restrictive or “diet-ish”

  1. Replace breakfast with a protein smoothie. Most people start the day wrong, having dessert for breakfast or skipping this most important meal altogether. A protein shake makes an easy replacement to stoke your metabolic fire to burn more calories during the whole day, accelerating weight loss. You can load a shake with superfoods, proteins, healthy fats, and phytonutrients that will keep your blood sugar balanced and your energy high throughout the day. Plus, they are very filling and satisfying— no worries here about going hungry. Protein shakes sustain you and help you control your appetite throughout the day. Grab some of my favorite shake recipes here.
  1. Upgrade your meat and eggs. Conventional meat and eggs often come loaded with hormones, antibiotics, from animals fed with grain and other foods that definitely do not belong in their diets. Look for animal products that are pasture-raised, grass-fed, and antibiotic-, hormone-, and pesticide-free. Go on a low-mercury diet by sticking with small, wild, or sustainably farmed fish. By the way, whole eggs are okay; you don’t need to stick to just egg whites. Yolks contain important vitamins and fats needed for brain and mood function.
  1. Replace gluten starches with green vegetables. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, spelt, and oats. It has been around since we began cultivating grains 10,000 years ago (still relatively new in the human diet). But 50 years ago, the type of gluten changed as we created new strains of wheat (genetically altered dwarf strains I call Frankenwheat), and this has created a veritable epidemic of problems, including a 400 percent increase in celiac disease and a dramatic rise in gluten sensitivity, affecting about eight percent of the population. While gluten-free grains are best, all grains (including breads, cereals, and snacks) — even gluten-free ones— can spike blood sugar and insulin. To break the addiction cycle, we need to shut down insulin production as much as possible. An easy way to do that is simply substitute another leafy or cruciferous vegetable for what would normally constitute a starch on your plate. You can easily do this when dining out as well. If your entree includes a baked potato, simply ask your server to substitute sautéed spinach.
  1. Replace bad oils for good oils. Corn, soybean, canola, and sunflower oils contain inflammatory omega-6 fats and currently make up 10 percent of our calories. Instead, stick to extra virgin olive oil or extra virgin coconut butter (also known as coconut oil). Extra virgin olive oil contains polyphenols, which are powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds. Olive oil has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease as much as or more than statins. Coconut butter or oil is a powerful cellular fuel and also contains anti-inflammatory fats such as lauric acid, the same fat found in breast milk. For high-heat cooking, grape seed oil is also safe.
  1. Replace bad fats for healthy fats. The standard American diet (SAD, indeed) contains a massive amount of pro-inflammatory fats that keep you sick, tired, fat, and inflamed. Make the leap to anti-inflammatory healthy fats. Have one serving of a healthy fat at all meals, which might be ¼ avocado, wild-caught salmon, grass-fed beef, or nut or seed butter such as almond or cashew.
  1. Replace snacks with nuts. Get rid of the sugary, processed snacks and keep nuts in your pantry instead. They have been proven to help with weight loss and reduce the risk of diabetes. They are also a great snack because they are full of protein, fiber, minerals, and good fats. Buy raw or lightly toasted unsalted nuts. Avoid nuts that are fried or cooked in oils. The best are almonds, walnuts, macadamia nuts, hazelnuts, and pecans. Stick with one or two handfuls for a snack once or twice a day. But be careful, nuts have a tendency to raise blood sugar if you binge on them. Remember a serving is 10 to 12 nuts or a good handful.
  1. Replace coffee for green tea. Coffee can interfere with your liver’s detoxification mechanisms, makes you less insulin sensitive, and its caffeine content revs up your stress hormones.  Make the switch to green tea and stick to one to three cups a day.  The small amount of caffeine won’t hurt and the antioxidants will heal.

The easiest and quickest way to jump-start these replacements is to reclaim your kitchen with 29 delicious recipes in my brand new Starter Kit. In addition, you will receive my 10-Day Detox Diet Roadmap, and 5 Tips to Eliminate Belly Fat. Get started right now with your free download.
