As you mayknow, V and I worked together in a magical little boutique she created, called Sanity. One of the main components of the store was a mindfulness and well-being section populated with aromatherapy products, handcrafted wall & table fountains, zen gardens, and other wonderful creations designed to help you slow down and look inward. Aromatherapy seemed like a lot of mumbo jumbo in our conservative little corner of Delaware, but it quickly caught on and was our strongest and most enduring section of the shop. Every season, V and I would offer workshops in aromatherapy to help people bring a bit of natural healing to their daily lives and aid in meditation and mindfulness. We’ve been chatting recently about starting this tradition back up!! So here I am … with a few tips on ways to use essential oils in this beautiful, transitional season of fall.
Why Autumn Aromatherapy?
As we move between the seasons, our bodies and minds also go through transitions. Spring and summer tend to be outwardly focused for mind and body… and now it’s time to start looking inward. Autumn is a wonderful time to begin a simple meditation practice in order to help prepare you for our seasonal “hibernation” in winter. I’ve always been a fan of Aromaland’s Meditation Blend for bringing in the the fall and winter. Comprised of Frankincense, Myrrh, Ylang Ylang, Sandalwood, Cistus Labdanum, this blend is warm and spicy, and consists of many oils which would be quite expensive to buy individually. Frankincense has a calming effect on the emotions, and has been known to slow down & deepen the breath… perfect for inducing that meditative state! The other oils in this blend have similar properties of relaxation, as well as some more practical properties like: antifungal, antiviral, antiseptic… perfect for cleansing the air in your home as we head into a time where we will be indoors more often.
Autumn Oils and Their Properties
Speaking of being indoors... how about setting a healthy, welcoming, and fragrant greeting for your family and guests every time they enter? There are hundreds of ways to use essential oils in your home to create a wonderful atmosphere and promote health & well-being. I highly recommend The Complete Book of Essential Oils & Aromatherapy by Valerie Ann Worwood. She dedicates a whole chapter to this!! Some of the most popular oils for use in scenting the home in autumn also have healthy benefits.
- Cedar (Cedrus Atlanticus): known to be a powerful antiseptic…particularly for bronchial infections. Definitely good to diffuse!!
- Clove Bud (Eugenia caryophyllata): antibacterial, antiseptic, and analgesic… clove is believed to help prevent illness and infection. In fact, it is so powerful that it has been used to sterilize surgical instruments in field hospitals.
- Ginger Root (Zingiber officinalis): Stimulating, warming, aphrodisiac and tonic, many people already know that it helps to soothe the stomach. In a room diffuser, ginger adds a wonderful warm & spicy note to a fall blend.
- Orange (Citrus Aurantium… other variations also available): antidepressant and mildly sedative, yet at the same time, orange is also refreshing and rejuvenating! Perfect to diffuse when someone in the house is organizing bills or studying for an exam!! Its aroma inspires and brings fresh energy & clears the mind. Citrus oils help to eliminate emotional confusion and are believed to increase one’s sense of humor and well-being. Definitely a win!!

While therapeutic grade essential oils are an amazing, natural way to promote wellness in your home, always be aware that many oils have strict usage guidelines in order to be considered safe to the body. Look into the specific properties of each oil you are using to see if they are safe for children, pets, or pregnant women… and whether they should be used in diffusers/inhalations, baths or directly on the skin.
